Libraries are a source of knowledge. Before the internet, if we needed to do any research, we go to the library. Still people visit libraries when they want to read a book or obtain information not on the internet. There are millions and millions of books available in the world. Libraries are full of them. To this day, education relies on books. We need books to educate ourselves and learn. Further, looking at screens all the time is not good for our eyes and books don’t make our eyes tired. Still the sales for books are higher than e-books which are online version of the book. Here’s a list of the world’s largest libraries.
The British Library is the national library of UK. The library receives every book published in England and the England with many copies of books published overseas. The library holds more than 14 million books with some items dating as far back as 2000 BC. The catalogue size is more than 170 million. Over 3 million items are added every year. The number of books available at the British library makes it the largest library in the world. The library holds various reading items such as newspapers, books, journals, magazines, patents, sound and music recordings and many more. Being the largest library, it has over 1.75 million visitors a year. The current library was established in 1973 but before it was part of the British Museum.
Library of Congress
The Library of Congress is the National research library of the United States. It is claimed to be the largest library in the world as the collections in the library are universal, not being limited subject matter, format or national boundaries but most believe it to be behind the British library. The library has research material from all parts of the world in 450 languages. Nearly two thirds of the books received every year are of languages other than English. The library has a catalogue size of 164 million. The library was established on April 24th 1800. Even though the library is open to the public only high-ranking government officials can check books and articles.
Library and Archives Canada
As the name states The Library and Archives Canada is a Canadian library made to obtain and preserve Canada’s documented heritage. The library is relatively new being established in 2004. The library has a large collection of various records throughout Canada’s rich history. The library has a catalogue of over 64 million articles per year. The library is accountable to the minister of heritage. Even though the library is relatively new, it is one of the fastest growing libraries as well.
